Estimated Time to Complete: 1 1/2 hours

Presenters: Renee Mattson Ph.D. and Emily Sobeck Ph.D.

Effective collaboration between early childhood educators and paraeducators is essential for creating cohesive, inclusive, and specialized learning environments. In this session, Renee Mattson (Ohio's Partnership for Excellence in Paraprofessional Preparation) and Dr. Emily Sobeck (Franciscan University of Steubenville) will share resources and strategies that strengthen these professional partnerships.

Drawing from the OPEPP-developed content on this subject matter and Dr. Sobeck’s book, Supporting Paraeducators in Inclusive and Special Education Settings, the session will explore key communication strategies, role clarity, and team-based planning practices. Participants will gain practical, research-informed approaches for building respectful, productive relationships with paraeducators across diverse early childhood settings.

If you're leading an early childhood team or working within one, this session offers concrete supports to improve collaboration and ultimately enhance outcomes for young children.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and apply effective communication strategies that foster mutual respect and understanding between early childhood educators and paraeducators, in alignment with DEC’s Collaboration and Teaming practices.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of paraeducator roles and responsibilities in inclusive and specialized early childhood settings, using frameworks from OPEPP and DEC to clarify professional boundaries and support role differentiation.
  3. Implement collaborative team-based planning practices that promote shared decision-making, equitable participation, and improved educational outcomes for young children with and without disabilities.
