Social Emotional Learning
Social emotional learning is a process through which adults and children-so teachers and students benefit from this approach-to understand, acquire, and then develop the attitudes and the skills to do the following things:
- Understand and manage emotions. This is an ongoing issue in education, particularly for many students who struggle to maintain the right emotional response to what's going on in the classroom.
- Set and achieve positive goals. How do we empower kids in their own learning? How do educators help them set higher goals and then provide the skills necessary to achieve those goals? Developing students' emotional intelligence and empathy is important, including how to help students feel for themselves and for other people, being aware of the environment, and being empathetic to other students and the teachers.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships. Everything in social emotional learning work is all about relationships. Educators all understand that kids are motivated by relationships. Relationships are the bedrock of development in other areas.
- Make responsible decisions.
OLAC's newest webinar, Social Emotional Learning, narrated by Dr. Brian McNulty, explores social emotional learning and its benefits for the student and the school. In this webinar, the research supporting social emotional learning is shared, along with the impact that SEL has on student achievement, student behavior, school climate, and teacher satisfaction.
Additional topics include social emotional learning as a part of the Ohio Improvement Process and the role that teacher-based teams, building leadership teams and district leadership teams have in this important work.
